Yesterday was by far the worst day of this pregnancy. On Sunday I had a small spot of bleeding so I rang NHS24 expecting to be told ‘get yourself to the hospital’ instead the rather nice lady assured me that small bleeding at this stage is normal and not to panic. I informed her that I have rhesus negative blood, again she assured me this was nothing to worry about. She is a nurse, I believed her… I shouldn’t have.
Yesterday morning I had more bleeding along with cramps. I phoned my doctor surgery who put me straight on the phone to my GP. When I explained what had happened she informed me to get to Princess Royal Maternity ASAP to be scanned. Thankfully my mum was at the flat with me as we were going to Scottish Slimmers for her weekly meeting. I picked up my pregnancy notes and got a taxi into Glasgow. As soon as I arrived there I got taken into the Day Care ward, got my blood pressure (126/57) and blood taken for testing. When I told the midwife what the NHS24 nurse had said she was appalled as I should have been taken to hospital on Sunday to get the Anti-D injection.
If a mother has rhesus negative blood and if the father has positive blood it means the baby may have positive blood. If my blood was to mix with the babies then this could be fatal, to us both. Throughout the pregnancy the mother will need to get the ‘anti-d’ injection to prevent this from happening during birth. The really love midwife informed me that bleeding could be an indicator that the bloods have mixed and the NHS24 nurse should have known this as it is ‘basic knowledge to a nurse’. I was livid.
A scan followed after the blood was taken and it was painful. My back was hurting so much and I had to lay there perfectly still for 40 minutes while the sonographer took millions on measurements. Thankfully the babies heartbeat was the first thing on the screen. Beating strong. The placenta is sitting in the correct position and they couldn’t see any reasons for the bleeds. However they did find that the babies measurements were smaller than they’d like. Everything is in proportion but the overall size is too small so I’ve to get more scans done throughout the pregnancy to keep an eye on the growth.
Back at the Day Care ward, I got my very first internal! It was not a pleasant experience AT ALL. I’ve never had a smear test done and they were checking for the womb opening incase that was where the blood was coming from. To make matter worse my mum was sat right next to me and had a prime view of it. I was mortified. Just mortified. Afterwards I got the anti-d injection which stung so much and then I was discharged.
They have no idea where the bleeding was coming from as everything came back good. Apart from the growth we have a very healthy baby. I was also told that according to the scan pictures there is a 98% chance that baby is a girl but they will find out for certain on 7th March when I get another growth scan done so there is a small chance it could be a boy but the sonographer said she was fairly certain of a girl. So no buying pink things just yet, hopefully after 27th March though. Fingers crossed
